- In addition to the federal mandated training course of at least 75 hours, with a classroom and clinical training portion, aspiring LNAs in Vermont must present proof of a 3-hour course in basic nursing skills.
- Another 30 hours of hands on instruction is also required.
- This 30-hour clinical training must be completed in a state approved facility under the supervision of an experienced nurse whether RN or LPN.

- On the day of the assessment, students must bring proof of identification, proof of education (HS Diploma or GED), a passport sized photo, two No.2 pencils and must also be properly dressed in their clinical scrubs.
- The final exam has a 72-question written test.
- This section of the test must receive a passing score for the examinees to move on to the manual skills evaluation.
- The test administrator will rate the students on five manual skills or exercises.
- The examinee must perform these clinical exercises on either a classmate that has previously passed the entire test or on the facilitator.
- All examinees may only sit for the assessment three times.
- If a passing score is not obtained, the training course must be retaken.

- To acquire reciprocity, the nursing aide must present proof that their certificate or license in the previous state is in good standing.
- There must be no allegations or charges of abuse or neglect on the CNA’s record.
- An application for reciprocity must be presented along with a release for the state’s criminal background check.
Vermont CNA Certification Renewal
- Renewal of license in the state of Vermont differs from that of most states in the US, as Vermont requires that the nurse aide must have been employed for at least 50 days during the past two years.
- The LNA must present proof of this paid employment.
- A few months before the license is due for renewal, the state will mail paperwork to the LNA to complete and return.
- Lapsed certifications may require retaking the state assessment before the LNA is permitted to renew.
- It is very important that LNAs update the LNA registry in case their name or address has changed or the nurse aide may not receive the renewal forms which will result in additional fees and possible retesting.
