Utah CNA Program Basics
CNA candidates in the state of Utah must undergo a state approved course with a training duration of at least 80 hours. Majority of the training programs in Utah exceed this required duration and average one hundred hours. All states split their CNA training into two portions, classroom and manual skills training. The difference is the amount of time each section requires. Nearly all training programs provide classroom training about twenty hours longer than the hands on portion. However, the clinical section of the training course is more intense and will require physical exertion that some trainees may not be prepared for. This is the reason classroom study is longer – to prepare aspiring nurse aides for the physical and mental demands of both manual training and the demands of the actual job afterward.
Utah CNA Examination Information
- Once the training course has been finished in full, students will sit for the state’s final CNA assessment.
- Like in training, the examination has two sections – written and a clinical skills evaluation.
- Both portions are significant and the student will not be certified unless they obtain a passing score on both.
- The written test is multiple-choice and once this section is finished and the examinee has been verified to have a passing score, he or she may move on to the manual skills evaluation.
- In the manual skills portion of the exam, the CNA student will be required to demonstrate five of the twenty five skills they have been trained in.
- Failure to pass the state assessment will require the student to retake the test.
- The examination must be passed within three attempts or the student will retake the training course.
Utah CNA Training Requirements
- CNA candidates are responsible for their training and certification.
- Student nurse aides that have been hired or have a job offer from a facility may not be charged for their training as long as they can provide proof of the employment or offer.
- Individuals outside the state may apply to take the state’s assessment without further training.
- However, if the assessment is not passed on the initial attempt, the applicant will need to enter into a state approved training program.
- CNAs from other states in the U.S may apply for reciprocity provided that their certification is active and in good standing.
Utah CNA Certification Renewal
- Renewals must be completed two years after the license was issued.
- Utah’s nurse aide registry will issue a notification about 45 days prior to the expiration date of the certificate.
- Certified Nurse Aides must accomplish all renewal forms before the end of the month when their license is due to expire.
- Utah provides a 30-day grace period after expiration.
- A small fee however is required for late renewals during the grace period.
