North Dakota CNA Program Basics

As of 2010, there are about 56 state approved CNA training courses in North Dakota. All training courses must meet the required training duration of 70 hours that includes both classroom and clinical training. Classroom studies include all necessary topics like basic nursing, infection control, patient care and many more

North Dakota CNA Training Requirements

  • These informative class modules provide students the know-how that they will need in performing their duties effectively and to understand the succeeding clinical training.
  • During the manual skills training, students will first learn how to perform several nursing activities such as dressing patients, patient physical transfers, oral care and other personal care duties.
  • Clinical exercises are practiced on classmates and eventually during the last stages of the course, actual patients under the supervision of an experienced nurse.

North Dakota CNA Examination Information

  • The CNA final assessment is given on the last day of the training program if the course is being taken in an employer’s facility.
  • Otherwise, the aspiring nurse aide will need to schedule or submit an application for a spot in a forthcoming state examination.
  • The applicant must pass first the written portion of the test before proceeding to the manual skills assessment.
  • All examinees will be given three chances to pass the exam with an acceptable grade.
  • Should the student fails be successful after three attempts, he or she must then retake the nurse aide training course before being allowed to challenge the assessment again.
  • An aide may not work as a CNA if he or she is unable to pass the assessment and gain certification within a certain period of time as expected by his or her employer (if an employer offered the training).
  • An aspiring CNA may continue to take a state approved training course and challenge the assessment until he or she passes and gets certified.

North Dakota CNA Certification Renewal

  • Renewal of certification must be processed every 2 years.
  • To qualify for renewal, the CNA must have worked in a for pay setting for at least 8 hours during the last 24 months.
  • Some employers may require that their nursing assistants complete a minimum number of in-service training hours to continue working in that facility.
  • Certain in-service hours are also required by the state and will be included on the website of North Dakota’s Department of Health or may also be issued to employers.
  • All facilities in North Dakota must provide in-service training to their nursing assistants when mandated by the state.
