Michigan CNA Certification and Licensing

Michigan CNA Program Basics

The Department of Community Health in the state of Michigan as well as the state’s Bureau of Health Professions regulates the CNA registry throughout Michigan.  Michigan is abided by the federal regulations put forth in 1987 by the US government stating that all nursing assistants in all 50 states must be registered. Aspiring nurse aides must complete a training program that adheres to the state’s regulations. A state approved CNA course offers at least 75 hours for both classroom and hands on training. These training programs allow students to work with patients under the supervision of an experienced nurse during the last stages of the course.

Michigan CNA Examination Requirements

  • The certification assessment in Michigan is administered by Prometric which is the same institution that conducts exams for certain states in the North Eastern United States.
  • While the Department of Community Health in Michigan settles complaints and issues CNA certification, Prometric maintains the Nurse Aide Registry.
  • The student must sit for the state assessment after completing the CNA training course.
  • Likewise with other states in the US, the assessment exam in Michigan includes written and hands on skills test.
  • In any event that a student fails to pass the exam initially, he or she will be given 2 more chances.
  • Failure to get a passing score after three attempts will result in the applicant needing to undergo the entire training course again,

Michigan CNA Certification Renewal

  • Those who pass the test will be awarded with a CNA certification from Prometric.
  • This certificate will permit the new CNA to work in any long term care facilities in Michigan.
  • CNAs will be notified by the state regarding the renewal of their certifications and will be required to accomplish a renewal packet.
  • Incomplete or invalid information written on the renewal form will result in the CNA being denied for re-certification.
  • Renewal disqualification will make the nurse aide ineligible of working in any facility all over the state.

Michigan CNA Certification Reciprocity

  • A nurse aide that had been certified and registered in another state may submit a request to be exempted from the required CNA training program in Michigan and challenge the state assessment right away.
  • The CNA must have completed a CNA training program that is compliant with the federal regulations in Michigan.
  • The certification must be active and in good standing with no charges of patient neglect or abuse.
  • CNA applicants and registered aides in Michigan should be responsible for the fees associated with the license renewal or certification unless their training was completed in a facility where the employer usually covers such fees.
