Kentucky CNA Program Basics
An aspiring CNA must first enrol in an approved nursing aide course to earn certification in Kentucky. The training program must offer the required training hours for both classroom and clinical setting. All hands on or clinical exercises are performed under a Registered Nurse’s supervision. Instead of providing a license, the state of Kentucky only offers certification to nurse aides. Kentucky CNA Certification Courses
The CNA training course includes topics such as providing personal care, basic nursing, how to care for mentally/cognitively impaired individuals, patients’ rights and infection control. The study about Infection control in Kentucky requires 16 hours. Training participants must be at least 18 years old and literate (able to write and read). Aspiring CNAs in Kentucky must pass a criminal background check.
Kentucky CNA Certification Reciprocity

- CNAs from other states may file an application to have their certification transferred to Kentucky without retaking a competency assessment and without needing to undergo training again.

Kentucky CNA Certification Renewal
- It is mandated by the state government that certifications must be renewed every 24 months.
- Provided that the CNA was working during the past 24 months, he or she does not need to sit for another competency assessment.
- The nursing assistant however, must prove their employment for the last two years.
- A nursing aide who is relocating from another state to Kentucky and needs to have his or her certification renewed can have the renewal request granted as long as the certification had been obtained from a facility or organization that is highly recognized by the state of Kentucky.
- Certification renewal reminders along with necessary renewal forms will be sent to CNAs by the state’s DOH.
- These forms must be filled out accordingly and returned prior to the expiration date of the certification.
