Kansas CNA Program Basics
CNAs in the state of Kansas provide daily care for residents of assisted living facilities and long term care facilities such as nursing homes. These nurse aides had undergone intense training to gain necessary preparations in nursing their patients or nursing home residents. Some CNAs may perform their duties in hospitals and apply certain treatments to patients under the supervision of a LPN or RN. Nursing aides who are employed in long term care facilities work directly under an experienced nurse on the “floor” or “wing” where they are assigned to on any given shift.
Kansas CNA Training Requirements
- The state of Kansas is very specific when it comes to implementing CNA training programs as such courses must have an approval from the state prior to operation.
- Some online websites will try to convince people who are interested in becoming CNAs to sign up for their program, but the state of Kansas does not approved online CNA courses.
- CNA students must complete a course that offers at least 90 hours of training.
- Included in the training program are classroom studies and clinical exercises.
- The clinical or hands on training requires students to practice actual care on a resident or patient, but should be performed under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Kansas CNA Certification Transfer
- Reciprocity with some states is practiced in Kansas.
- CNAs from other states may have their training and other certification requirements waived.
- Kansas, however does not allow certification transfer from certain states.
- Thus, nursing aides that are moving to Kansas and wish to have their license transferred should contact the states’ Department of Health to get a confirmation about the possibility of processing reciprocity.
- A transferring nurse aide can download forms from the state’s Department of Health in case Kansas doesn’t have reciprocity agreement with the state where the CNA is transferring from.
- Another option for out of state CNAs is to contact Kansas DOH and request for the copies of the form to be mailed to them.
Kansas CNA Certification Renewal
- CNAs in Kansas must renew their certification every two years.
- Prior to license expiration, Kansas’ Department of Health sends out certification renewal notification and forms to CNAs in the state.
- CNAs and sometimes their employer are required to fill out the form for the license renewal process.
- Unless their employers pay for the renewal fees, CNAs must be able to do so.
- Other employers opt to reimburse the nurse aide instead.
- In order to give DOH sufficient time to review and verify the renewal form’s content and information, the form must be submitted one month prior to the expiration of the license.
- CNAs must have been employed and compensated during the previous 24 months to maintain the validity of the certification.
