Idaho CNA Certification and Licensing

Idaho CNA Program Basics

All aspiring nursing assistants in the state of Idaho are required to complete a CNA course with a minimum training duration of 120 hours.  Classroom studies should consume 80 hours from the total training duration while the remaining time should be allotted for clinical or hands on training. All laboratory or clinical exercises will be performed under the watchful eye of a Registered Nurse. During the last stages of the nurse aide program, the students may work with an experienced CNA on the floor, especially if the program is an in-facility training course. Students will be required to provide care for patients or residents under the supervision of a certified nurse aide. Thus, these students should not be, in any circumstances left alone while providing this care.

Idaho CNA Examination

  • Once the trainee has completed the training satisfactorily, he or she may be qualified to sit for the state CNA certification assessment.
  • The exam is composed of two portions: written and hands on assessment test.
  • Students who are able to pass the written portion of the test may proceed to the clinical portion where they will be rated on their performance on several exercises.
  • Clinical exercises during the assessment will be prepared by the examiner.
  • Failure to achieve passing mark on either portion of the assessment will result in the examinee re-taking the exam on another testing schedule.
  • Students are given a maximum of 3 attempts to pass the CNA state assessment.
  • Students who fail to pass the test after 3 tries will be required to undergo the CNA training course again.

Idaho CNA Certification Transfer

  • Out of state CNAs are allowed to transfer their licenses to Idaho. In line with this, CNAs must submit all necessary documents as a proof of their certification from other states.
  • The CNA must prove that he or she had been legitimately employed as a nurse aide within the past 24 months.
  • Before a certified nurse aide from another state can begin working in an Idaho nursing facility, an application for certification transferral must be submitted.

Idaho CNA Certification Renewal

  • As with other states in the United States, renewal of certification in Idaho works much the same way.
  • The aide will receive a notification from the state health department or nursing board once every 2 years. T
  • The CNA should complete all the paperwork that are included in the notification letter.
  • Nursing assistants must be able to prove that they have been compensated for their employment during the past 2 years; some forms may need to be accomplished by the previous or current employer.
  • In any case that the CNA is no longer working in a facility at the time of renewal but still wishes to maintain the license, he may need to contact his previous employer to have the required paperwork completed.
  • A nursing assistant who has not worked with pay for the past 24 months will need to retake the CNA training course as well as the exam.
