Connecticut CNA Certification and Licensing

Connecticut CNA Program Basics

Aspiring nurse aides in the state of Connecticut must complete at least 100 hours of training that includes classroom training and clinical or laboratory activities.  All hands on or laboratory exercises are performed under the supervision of a RN (Registered Nurse) who has at least 2 years of experience. The training supervisor should have at least one year of work related experience involving long-term care. The Connecticut Department of Health requires that all training programs cover the following topics with at least 16 hours each: residents rights, communication and interpersonal skills, residents independence, infection control as well as safety and emergency procedures including the Heimlich maneuver.

Connecticut CNA Certification

  • Connecticut has approximately 155 approved CNA training programs that cover the above topics including the 25 topics mandated by the state’s federal regulations.
  • An aspiring CNA must finish the program and pass the state assessment within 24 months to obtain a license.
  • All nursing aide students  are required to be tested on five of the twenty-five topics covered in the program.
  • The applicant must  submit to and pass a criminal background check.
  • While a minor criminal record will not immediately ban the applicant from obtaining a CNA certification, any history of neglect or abuse in a previous nursing job will be  grounds for disqualification.
  • Renewal of CNA license is required every 24 months to remain active on the Nurse Aide Registry.
  • As in most states, an employer may opt to pay for or reimburse the CNA for the license renewal fees .

Connecticut CNA Certification Transfer

  • The state of Connecticut has certification reciprocity with other states in the US.
  • A CNA may transfer certification from another state provided the license is current and valid and the applicant has no history of abuse or neglect in previous nursing jobs.
  • Transferal fees apply and proper documentation are needed to receive a license from the Connecticut Nurse Aide Registry.
