California CNA Program Specifics
The implementation of Certified Nurse Assistant training programs in California is different than most states. California has hundreds of available training programs approved by the California Department of Health Services (DHS). While most employers require a CNA be at least 18 years of age, students as young as 15 may enter a training program provided they are 16 at the completion of the training course.
California CNA Requirements and Certification
- Aspiring CNA students must be turning 16 on or before the completion of training.
- Students must pass the standard criminal background check.
- Trainees will undergo a series of physical exams to ensure they won’t be a health risk to patients.
- All certification programs being offered must comply with California’s federal requirements.
- The total duration of the program is at least 150 hours and includes classroom studies and clinical training.
- Students must pass a competency examination once all training discussions and exercises are completed.
- All passing student are listed automatically on the California DHS Nurse Registry.
California CNA Certification Transfer
- A CNA with a valid and active license may transfer certification to California provided there is no history of abuse or neglect in previous nursing jobs.
- Applicants need to have worked at least one day as a CNA in the past 24 months.
- A transferring CNA is required to submit all necessary forms and documents as demanded by California DHS.
- A transferring CNA’s fingerprints will be taken as part of the criminal background check.
