A certified nursing assistant can have a very varied and interesting day at work. The main function of a certified nursing assistant is to look after the basic needs of the patient. You must love working with people as you will be dealing with them when they are stressed, ill and perhaps more difficult to deal with than usual. By studying for your certified nursing assistant certification you will develop the skills and knowledge to help you deal with the situations you will come across every day.

What does the CNA certification test cover?

The exact syllabus for the CNA certification test you should sit will be determined by the State in which you want to work but most will take the format of a written or oral examination combined with a practical test. During the practical test you will be observed when you are caring for your patients. The examiners want to check your ability to apply the theory you study during your CNA training. The written or oral examination will cover similar areas regardless of where you sit the exam. Those areas will include questions on:

1) Activities of Daily Living:

  • Hygiene
  • Dressing and Grooming
  • Nutrition and Hydration
  • Elimination
  • Rest/Sleep/Comfort
  • 2) Basic nursing skills including infection control i.e. wearing gloves, washing hands etc., data collection i.e. urine output, temperature etc., and technical and emergency procedures.

    3) Your ability to carry out the key requirements of the role of a nursing aide i.e. client care and rights, legal issues and requirements, communication with the rest of the nursing team.

You can also expect to be tested on the psychosocial care needs of your patients i.e. questions on mental health, spiritual and cultural needs.

Should you study for your CNA certification online?

cna certificationWhether you should study for your CNA certification online or not depends on the type of student you are and how much spare time you have.
